SMU’s Engel Named C-USA Soccer Offensive Player of the Week

DALLAS (SMU)- SMU men’s soccer player Tyler Engel was tabbed the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week after his two game-winning goals and two assists led the Mustangs to a perfect 2-0 weekend on the road. Engel was also named to the TopDrawerSoccer National Team of the Week.

Friday, SMU defeated host Dartmouth, 2-1. After going down a goal, Engel assisted the game-tying goal in the 63rd minute and drew a penalty kick, which he converted, in the 70th minute.

Engel again got the Mustangs’ offense rolling Sunday at Harvard with an assist on Ben Hill’s goal in the 19th minute. SMU would go up 2-0 before the Crimson stormed back with two second-half tallies to send the game into extra time. The teams remained tied through the first overtime period before Engel broke through with a goal of his own in the 105th minute to win the game for the Mustangs. Freshman Derek Schrick slotted a ball through to Engel who went one-on-one with the Harvard goalkeeper and scored from six yards out. The goal was Engel’s second of the season and team-leading seventh point of the year.

The award is the first of Engel’s career.

SMU hosts the SMU Classic Presented by Jason’s Deli Sept. 14-16 at Westcott Field. The Mustangs play Oakland on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and UC-Davis on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Tulsa will also compete.
