SMU’s Fjortoft Named Athlete of the Year

NEW ORLEANS (SMU) – Senior Silje Fjortoft was named the South Central Region Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association for the third time of her career. She also received the title in 2007 and 2009, and is the first athlete in the region’s history to ever win three regional titles.

Fjortoft is undefeated for the season, winning six consecutive gold medals. Her most recent win came at the NCAA South Central Regional Championships when she crossed the finish line with a time of 19:59.1—more than 26 seconds faster than the runner up from Rice. She also set a conference record and led SMU to a conference title when she won the Conference USA Championships (16:06.8).

Fjortoft will compete at the NCAA Championships on Nov. 21 in Terre Haute, Ind. The race will be broadcast live on NCAA.com beginning at 11:58 a.m. CT.
