IRVING, Texas (SMU) – Keena Mays earned her third Conference USA Player of the week award after leading the Mustangs to wins over Houston and UTEP, extending SMU’s win streak to eight games and remaining unbeaten in Conference USA, league officials announced Monday.

The junior Kansas transfer from Arlington, Texas averaged 19.5 points in the two games, scoring 26 at UTEP, which received votes in six straight polls going into the game. She also had seven assists, five steals and four rebounds against the Miners. Mays was a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line, shot 50 percent from the field, 9-18, and 57.1 percent from beyond the arc, hitting 4-of-7 attempts. Mays led the Mustangs to a 58-54 come-from-behind victory against Houston by scoring six points in last 1:11 and being a part of the defensive pressure that forced Houston into four turnovers in the final 45 seconds of play. She ended the game with 13 points, nine rebounds and four steals.

Mays is averaging 20.2 points per game and shooting 43.8 percent from 3-point range. She would lead the conference and rank 17th and 10th nationally if she met the 75 percent of games minimum. She has scored at least 20 points in seven of 12 games this season, including three conference games, and is averaging 4.58 assists per game. College Sports Madness also tabbed her as the C-USA Player of the Week.

SMU takes on UAB Thursday in Moody Coliseum at 7 p.m. The Mustangs conclude the homestand against Marshall Sunday at 2 p.m. before playing back-to-back road games. SMU has designated Sunday’s game as its annual breast cancer awareness in conjunction with the Play4Kay initiative.
