SMU’s McJunkin On Rimington Watch List

DALLAS (SMU) – SMU senior Blake McJunkin is one of 51 players on the Fall Watch List for the 2012 Rimington Trophy, the award organization announced today. The Rimington Trophy is presented annually to the most outstanding center in college football and is named after Dave Rimington, who was a consensus first-team All-America center at Nebraska in 1981 and 1982.

McJunkin, who was selected as the recipient of the 2012 Conference USA Sportsmanship Award in June, played in three games last season before suffering an ankle injury. He was awarded a medical redshirt. As a junior in 2010, the Plano native started all 14 games at center. He was named All-Conference USA honorable mention, blocking for an offense that totaled a school-record 3,861 passing yards and added 1,943 yards on the ground.

While more than a dozen All-America football teams are selected annually, the Rimington Trophy committee uses these four prestigious teams to determine a winner – American Football Coaches Association, Walter Camp Foundation, Sporting News and Football Writers Association of America. The Center with the most first team votes will be determined the winner.

The winner will be honored at Rimington Trophy Presentation banquet at the Rococo Theater in Lincoln, Nebraska on January 12, 2013.

On the heels of its third straight bowl appearance, SMU will host Texas A&M, TCU, Memphis, C-USA West rivals Houston and Tulsa and 2011 C-USA Champion Southern Miss at Ford Stadium in 2012. Ticket sales have been brisk, as SMU has already surpassed its season ticket sales totals for the rest of the June Jones era.
