IRVING (C-USA/SMU) – SMU junior Kevin Pope has been named the Conference USA Special Teams Player of the Week, the league office announced today. Pope recovered two fumbles, including one which he returned for a touchdown, as SMU routed Houston, 72-42, last Thursday.

Pope returned a fumble of the opening kickoff of the second half for the first TD of his career, pushing the SMU lead to 35-14. It was one of two special teams fumble recoveries for Pope and two of nine takeaways by the Mustangs on the night. He also added a pair of tackles in the win.

Pope is the third Mustang to earn a weekly honor from the league in 2012, as Kenneth Acker and Randall Joyner have each been chosen previously. C-USA Football Players of the Week are voted on by a panel of the league’s media.

Pope and his Mustang teammates return to the field on Saturday, Oct. 27, when Memphis comes to Ford Stadium for a 2 p.m. Homecoming match-up. Tickets are available at 214-SMU-GAME.
