IRVING, Texas (SMU) – Senior Dana Powell was named to the Conference USA Volleyball All-Academic Team for the second consecutive year, conference officials announced Tuesday. The outside hitter from Tulsa, Okla., earned a 3.63 GPA during her career at SMU as a double-major in accounting and advertising.

Powell, a two-time All-America Honorable Mention, leads the team in kills for the third-straight season with 365, averaging 2.97 per set. She became the first player at SMU with at least 1,500 kills and digs and is second in school history in both categories with 1,529 kills and 1,622 digs. She has also been selected to the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll all three years.

She posted career highs in both categories this season with 25 kills at Houston on Nov. 11 and 31 digs against Alabama on Sept. 3. Powell has 453 digs this season, the most she’s had in a season and ninth most at SMU, and has blocked 72 attacks to push her career total to 265, ninth all-time at SMU.

SMU will play its final match of the regular season Saturday against Tulsa in Moody Coliseum at 1 p.m. The Mustangs handed Tulsa its only conference loss this season, ending the Golden Hurricane’s 26-match conference win-streak with a 3-1 win on Oct. 5. Powell is one of four seniors who will be honored during a ceremony before the match.
