IRVING, Texas (SMU) – Fresh off her 4-under final round on Tuesday that was good for individual medalist honors at the Chip-N Club Invite in Lincoln, Neb., freshman Alexandra Rossi returned to Dallas just in time to receive Conference USA Women’s Golfer of the Week honors.

Rossi won the Chip-N Club Invite by two strokes after shooting 3-over par (70-81-68=219) for the event. After a tough second round, Rossi rebounded in a huge way in the final round, including notching three birdies on the back nine, none more exciting than on the 17th. The freshman nailed a 40-foot downhill putt for birdie, essentially clinching victory.

Rossi expressed much excitement upon earning the award.

“This is a huge honor, especially being a freshman,” Rossi said. “I came into college just hoping to go out and play my game and improve my game. Winning the first tournament is a huge accomplishment and winning this honor is fantastic.”

SMU is carrying a lot of momentum after a successful season-opening match, in which the team also took home the team championship, its second-consecutive at the event.

“It is a boost of confidence,” Rossi said. “We’re really excited about our next tournament. As the season goes on, the competition is going to get harder, but we’re working hard and we’re ready.”

Rossi feels confident that she can help her team reach its goals as the season progresses.

“I am very excited about this season going forward,” Rossi said. “My game is in a good place and I feel I am improving. My coaches are helping me a lot.”

The last SMU golfer to earn Golfer of the Week honors was Felicia Espericueta on Sept. 28, 2011, after she won the Badger Invitational in Madison, Wisc.

The Mustangs head to Tulsa, Okla., for the Dale McNamara Invitational starting Monday.
