IRVING, Texas (SMU) – Sophomore Akil Simpson was named Conference USA Player of the Week after posting double-doubles to lead the Mustangs to a pair of conference wins, including a win over a Marshall team which was 3-0 in conference games. She is the first Mustang to have back-to-back double-doubles since Delisha Wills accomplished the feat in Nov. 2010.

The forward from Duncanville, Texas had 16 points and a career-high 15 rebounds in SMU’s 76-61 win at home before scoring 20 points with 13 at Marshall, helping the Mustangs take a 55-53 win on the road. She was 12-of-20 from the field, shooting 60.0-percent, and went 12-of-15 from the free throw line in the two games.

Simpson is second on the team this season, averaging 10.3 points per game overall, but is averaging a team-high 14.5 points per game against C-USA opponents. She is also second with 7.2 rebounds per game, but has averaged 10.8 per game in the four conference games.

Simpson is the first Mustang to garner C-USA Player of the Week honors this season, and this is the first award of her career. The Mustangs next game is Sunday against East Carolina in Moody Coliseum at noon.
