SMU’s Simpson Named To C-USA All-Freshman Team

IRVING, Texas (SMU) – Akil Simpson was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team league officials announced Sunday.

The Duncanville, Texas native averaged 5.0 points per game, and was fourth on the team with 4.3 rebounds per game. She scored a season-high 17 points against then-No. 23 Texas at the BTI Classic in Las Vegas, and grabbed a season-high 11 rebounds at Tulane.

Simpson averaged 16.4 minutes per game, playing in every game this season. She is the third Mustang to be named to the C-USA All-Freshman Team since SMU joined the league prior to the 2005-06 season.

Rice forward Jessica Kuster, Southern Miss guard Jamierra Faulkner, UAB forward Karisma Chapman and UTEP guard Kelli Willingham joined Simpson on the All-Freshman team.

SMU and Simpson will open the Conference USA Tournament against UTEP in El Paso, Texas on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. CT.
