The Mustangs (8-13, 4-5 C-USA) closed the door on the Blazers (17-4, 7-2 C-USA), holding off a late rally for a 25-23 win in the third set. SMU erased an early 3-point deficit in what proved to be the final set, tying the score 13-13 before taking its first lead in the set, 17-16. SMU pushed its lead to three, but UAB tied the set 23-23. Young and Dana Powell scored kills on the next two points to give SMU the win, 25-23.

The Mustangs didn’t let the deficit get any bigger and eventually broke a 15-15 tie with a 6-1 run on their way to a 25-19 win and a 1-0 lead in the match.

The Mustangs kept the momentum in the second set. With the score tied 6-6, SMU scored the next nine points for a 15-6 lead they wouldn’t relinquish, stretching the lead to as many as 12 points, 19-7. The Blazers didn’t get within seven points the rest of the set as SMU took a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-17 win.

SMU hit .230 in the match, while holding UAB to a .145 attack percentage. The Mustangs had 72 digs to UAB’s 55. Powell had 8 kills and seven digs. Kelli Becerra matched Powell’s team-high with her 12th double-double of the season with 25 assists and 13 digs.
