Tony Romo Leads Celebrity Field of ClubCorp Classic in Las Colinas

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo leads the celebrity division of the inaugural ClubCorp Classic for the second straight day of the three-day competition.
 
Romo leads Mardy Fish by three points while Annika Sornestam and Adam Thielan trail the NFL on CBS analyst by six points as the celebrity competition is utilizing a modified Stableford scoring format.
 
“It was a challenging day. Winds were howling and the course is in great condition,” Romo said. “To shoot even par, 1-under, it’s a great round. It was a good day.”
 
Romo will tee off in the Championship round on Sunday at 9:42 am at Las Colinas Country Club.
 
The unique format of the ClubCorp Classic features 78 PGA TOUR Champions professional golfers and 45 celebrities from sports and entertainment.
 
The PGA TOUR Champions professionals are playing 54 holes of stroke play for a purse of $2 million, along with the celebrities in a separate $500,000 competition.
 
Steven Alker is atop the professional leaderboard at 8-under, leading two-time U.S. Open champion Lee Janzen and Jerry Kelly by two shots going into the final round.
 
Due to the possibility of inclement weather Sunday afternoon, tee times for the final round have been adjusted to accommodate the completion of play.
 
The initial morning wave will include all 78 PGA TOUR Champions professionals and the top 22 celebrities.
 
The remaining 22 celebrities and 10 ClubCorp amateur members will tee off from Holes 1 and 10 starting at 12:30 p.m.

Amateur ClubCorp Members:

Joining the celebrities and PGA TOUR Champions professionals this week are a select group of 10 amateur ClubCorp members who earned their place in the field through a nationwide qualifying process that included ClubCorp’s incredible portfolio of courses and private clubs and culminated at Hackberry Creek Golf Club in Irving on Wednesday.

The final 10 players teed it up for two separate competitions this week with five squaring off in a Net Modified Stableford format and the other five in a Gross Modified Stableford format. Both winners will be recognized in the trophy presentation alongside the PGA TOUR Champions and Celebrity winners on Sunday.

Justin Winkler, whose home course is Wildflower Country Club in Temple, Texas, leads the NET competition with a total score of 75.

In the Gross division, another local Dallas resident, Ryan Zamorano, who the 2005 National Junior College event while playing golf at Paris junior college leads the GROSS competition with a total score of 68. Zamorano is a member at Prestonwood Country Club and plays occasionally in local competitions against celebrity leader Tony Romo.
