DENTON, Texas – North Texas men’s basketball sailed to a 78-47 victory over the Privateers of UNO Tuesday night at the Super Pit.

Freshman forward Tony Mitchell led the charge for the Mean Green (7-6) with career-high 15 points, six boards and a career-high three blocks.

“I really liked our patience tonight, especially in the second half, and we really worked our offense well against a tough New Orleans team,” said head coach Johnny Jones. “We start the always grueling Sun Belt Conference schedule on Thursday against the defending conference champions [UALR] and we couldn’t be more excited.”

UNO (9-5) was able to throw North Texas off its game early and held a 15-14 lead over the Mean Green early in the first half but was overpowered in the final 10 minutes of the half and went into halftime trailing 38-23.

The second half started as a back-and-forth matchup like the first half until NT mounted a 19-4 run to stretch the lead to 76-43 with 2:42 remaining.

Sophomore Alzee Williams and freshman guard Chris Jones joined Mitchell as the only three Mean Green players in double figures scoring. Jones added five rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Senior Kedrick Hogans hauled in eight rebounds to fall just one shy of a career-high and poured in four points.

Every member of the Mean Green contributed to the win, marking the first time since the season opener against St. Gregory’s that every North Texas player scored.

The five blocks for the Mean Green defense tonight registered a new season-high and was the first time since Nov. 30, 2010 against UTA that a NT team had five or more blocks.

North Texas will return to action Thursday night when it opens Sun Belt Conference play against UALR. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Super Pit.
