UNT Falls To ULM

Monroe, La. (11/17/12) – The Mean Green struggled to score touchdowns as the North Texas football team fell to ULM, 42-16, on Saturday afternoon at Malone Stadium.

ULM improves to 7-4 and 5-2 in the Sun Belt, while North Texas falls to 4-7 and 3-4 in the conference. The Warhawks lead the series, 16-13.

The Warhawks scored touchdowns in each of the first three quarters and sealed the win with three scores in the fourth. North Texas did not find the endzone until the second half, and by then the Mean Green had too much to overcome.

ULM scored the game’s first touchdown, which was the sixth straight game that the Mean Green’s opponent scored first. Quarterback Kolton Browning scored the first TD for the Warhawks, a one-yard rush.

Browning passed for 324 yards and three touchdowns. He completed 25-of-34 passes, including a long of 61 yards. He capped his day with a 61-yard touchdown pass to Je’Ron Hamm in the fourth quarter.

Mean Green cornerback Zach Whitfield recorded his third interception of the season early in the second quarter. Whitfield had one interception in each of the first two games of the season but

had gone eight games without a pick before today.

Junior kicker Zach Olen got North Texas on the board with a 29-yard field goal in the second quarter, following the Whitfield interception. Olen has now connected on eight of his nine field goals with his only miss during that time coming from 54 yards away.

ULM responded with a 77-yard drive that resulted in a seven-yard touchdown play from Browning to Brent Leonard. The touchdown put ULM ahead 14-3, with 1:19 left in the first half.

Derek Thompson drove the Mean Green down the field but threw his second interception of the day into the ULM endzone. North Texas had the ball inside the ULM 25-yard line twice in the first half, but only came away with three points on those two possessions.

Thompson passed for 322 yards and two touchdowns against ULM. He completed 27-of-43 passes.

Following a ULM rushing touchdown to start off the third quarter, North Texas scored its first TD of the day with four-yard reception by Andrew Power. It was his first touchdown of the year and put the score at 21-10.

ULM scored touchdowns on all three of its possessions in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach for the Mean Green.

Down 28-10 in the fourth quarter, North Texas went for it on fourth-and-one on the ULM one-yard line and came up just short. Brandin Byrd was held to no gain as ULM took over possession.

Byrd rushed for 77 yards on 21 carries to lead the Mean Green running backs.

True freshman wide receiver Carlos Harris set a career high with eight receptions. His 118 receiving yards is also a career high.

North Texas finishes the 2012 season with a road game against WKU on Saturday, Nov. 24 at 12 p.m.
