UNT Loses Softball Opener To Oklahoma State

Houston, Texas (2/10/12) – Kat Espinosa threw a no-hitter against the North Texas softball team to lead the No.11 Oklahoma State Cowgirls to a 2-0 win in first-day action at the Houston Hilton Plaza Classic on Friday afternoon.

Oklahoma State wins its first game of the season, while the Mean Green falls to 0-1. North Texas is now 6-3 in season-opening games and 3-8 in the series against the Cowgirls.

Espinosa held the Mean Green hitless and scoreless for seven innings of play. She struck out seven batters and allowed three walks.

North Texas pitcher Ashley Kirk held the Cowgirls scoreless through five innings of work. In the sixth inning, Kirk allowed a bunt single to Kelsey Anchors, who then advanced to second on a sacrifice and scored off an RBI single by Tamara Brown. Anchors knocked in OSU’s second run of the game in the seventh with an RBI single.

Kirk pitched seven innings and allowed one earned run off six hits and four walks. She struck out seven batters.

The first-day games were pushed back four hours due to a weather delay. The final game of the day, North Texas versus Houston, was canceled.

North Texas will play two games on Saturday, Feb. 11. The Mean Green will face Sam Houston State at 9 a.m. and Texas A&M Corpus Christi at 5 p.m. in second-day action at the Houston Hilton Plaza Classic.
