UNT Softball Defeats SFA

DENTON, Texas – Lisa Johnson knocked in the game-winning run with a walk-off sacrifice fly to lead the North Texas softball team to a 3-2 win against Stephen F. Austin on Wednesday night at Lovelace Stadium.

The Mean Green improves to 24-24-1, while the Lady Jacks fall to 16-31. North Texas won both games against SFA this season.

Johnson went 1-for-3 with one run scored and three RBI in the win. She knocked in all the Mean Green’s runs in the game, including a two-run homer in the first inning that gave North Texas an early lead.

With the game tied, 2-2, in the bottom of the seventh and runners at second and third, Johnson brought home Lesley Hirsch from third with a shallow pop fly to right field to end the game.

Ashley Kirk (11-11) picked up her 11th victory of the season, tying her win total from last year. She also moved into a tie for fourth place on NT’s single-season win list. Kirk pitched a complete game, giving up one earned run off two hits.

The sophomore pitcher pitched four perfect innings before walking the lead-off batter in the fifth. A Mean Green error and an RBI single cut the North Texas advantage to one, 2-1.

SFA tied the game in the sixth inning with a solo home run.

Hirsch led off the seventh inning with a single to the shortstop, beating out the throw to the first. Megan Rupp advanced her to second with a sacrifice bunt and Hirsch moved to third with a Brooke Foster single. On a 3-2 count, Johnson brought home Hirsch with the walk-off sacrifice fly.

Hirsch went 3-for-3 in the game with three singles. She also scored the game-winning run. Foster also posted three hits in the game, going 3-for-4.

Johnson hit her fifth home run of the season. She moved into sole possession of third place on NT’s career home run list with 28. With her three RBI, she moved into third place at North Texas with 92 career RBI.

With her eight strikeouts today, Kirk moves into second place on NT’s single-season strikeout list with 152. She set the record last year with 158.

North Texas returns to action on Saturday, May 5 when it concludes its regular season with a doubleheader against Northwestern State at home at 3 p.m.
