UNT Softball Drops UTA

DENTON, Texas (4/30/13) – Taylor Schoblocher hit a walk-off grand slam to lift the North Texas softball team to an 8-7 win against UT Arlington on Tuesday afternoon at Lovelace Stadium.

The Mean Green improves to 26-22 overall, while UTA falls to 22-25. North Texas wins the season series against UTA, 2-1, after falling by a score of 2-1 to the Mavericks last week.

UTA jumped out to a 4-0 lead and did not trail until Schoblocher’s long ball went over the outfield fence. Down 6-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh, North Texas loaded the bases for Schoblocher. The freshman hit a towering home run to left field to clear the bases and win the game for the Mean Green.

Schoblocher leads the team with 10 home runs, and she sets the home record by a North Texas freshman. It was the first grand slam of her career. She went 2-for-4 in the game with five RBI, tying the school record for RBIs in a single game.

Lauren Poole (2-4) picks up her second win of the season. She was the

third Mean Green pitcher to see action. The junior pitched two innings and allowed one run off three hits. Terri Lyles (19-11) picked up the loss in relief. She pitched 2.1 innings and allowed five runs off six hits. Lyles won last week’s game against the Mean Green.

Starter Brittany Simmons lasted just one inning for the Mean Green. She gave up four runs off four hits in the first inning of the ball game. Meagan Michele aided the Mavericks with a two-run homer in the first.

The North Texas offense pecked away at the lead, scoring solo runs in the first second, fourth and sixth innings. Schoblocher knocked in the first run in the bottom of the first with an RBI single, and North Texas scored a second run in the second inning off an error.

Tori Bice, who pitched four innings, knocked in a run with her first career double in the fourth. North Texas cut the lead to 6-4 by scoring a fourth run in the sixth off a Mavs error. Each team recorded three errors in the game.

Brooke Foster, Dani Hoff and Jordan Terry hit consecutive singles to load the bases for Schoblocher with one out in the seventh. Schoblocher has hit three home runs in the last three games, and has posted a hit in 12 of her last 13 games.

North Texas finishes up its regular season when it faces Stephen F. Austin on the road on Wednesday, May 1 at 4 pm.
