UNT Softball Gets 2 Wins On Friday

DENTON, Texas (2/17/12) – Caitlin Grimes knocked in four runs and Ashley Kirk tied a school record with 14 strikeouts to lead the North Texas softball team to two wins on day one of the Fairfield Inn and Suites Classic at Lovelace Stadium on Friday afternoon. The Mean Green defeated Northern Illinois, 8-3, and finished the day with a 5-0 victory against Missouri State.

North Texas improves to 3-3 on the season and 2-0 at home. The Mean Green, Wichita State and Creighton all posted 2-0 records in first-day tournament action.

Grimes jump-started the Mean Green offense in the first game with a 3-for-3 performance. With the bases loaded in the first, the senior brought home two runs with a single. She brought home a third run with a single in the third and capped the scoring with an RBI base hit in the sixth inning.

Kirk picked up her first win of the season in the Mean Green’s second victory of the day. She tied her own school record with 14 strikeouts. She pitched a seven-inning shutout, allowing just three hits. The Mean Green offense supported Kirk with five runs in the first three innings.

Brittany Simmons improved to 2-0 this season with a solid performance in game one against Northern Illinois. She allowed one run off three hits in five innings of work.

Megan Rupp also had a stellar offensive performance on Friday. She went 3-for-4 with two runs scored against Northern Illinois and then went 2-for-4 against the Bears with two runs scored.

Lisa Johnson knocked in two of NT’s first four runs against Missouri State. She posted an RBI in the first inning and walked in a run in the second.

Maddelyn Fraley led off the third inning with a long home run to left center field. It was her third home run of the season. The senior has already tied her home run total from last season. Fraley went 2-for-3 in the game with two RBI.

Saturday’s games have been canceled due to rain.
