UNT Softball Wins Doubleheader Against ULM

DENTON, Texas  – Ashley Kirk pitched a no-hitter and picked up a win in relief to lead the North Texas softball team to a doubleheader sweep against ULM on Saturday afternoon at Lovelace Stadium. The Mean Green won the first game, 8-0, in five innings and took the second game, 8-7.

The Mean Green snaps a two-game losing streak and improves to 24-22 overall and 11-9 in the conference. ULM falls to 19-29 and 3-16 in the Sun Belt. North Texas can pick up its second conference series sweep this season with a third win on Sunday.

Kirk improves to 12-8 with the two wins. In the first game, she pitched a five-inning no-hitter. She allowed just two walks and struck out six batters. It was her first solo no-hitter of her career. The junior combined with Lauren Poole to no-hit Troy in 2011.

With North Texas down, 7-6, in the top of the sixth of the second game, Kirk relieved Tori Bice. She struck out the final batter of the inning and became the pitcher of record when North Texas took the lead in the bottom of the sixth off a single by Taylor Schoblocher. Kirk put the Warhawks down in order in the seventh to pick up the win.

The Mean Green offense scored four runs in the first inning of the first game and stayed ahead the rest of the way. Dani Hoff posted the first of her three singles in the opening game and also knocked in the first run. Jackie Miller posted a two-RBI double to put North Texas ahead, 4-0.

Lesley Hirsch went 2-for-4 in the opening game with three runs scored and two RBI. She posted a two-RBI triple in the fifth. Brooke Foster went 3-for-4 and ended the game on the run-rule with an RBI single.

The Mean Green offense needed to come from behind in the second game. ULM scored four runs in the first inning off two walks and two errors. The Mean Green made two more errors in the second inning, leading to two more runs for ULM.

North Texas began cutting into the lead with three runs in the second off an error and RBIs by Paige Kisling and Foster. The Mean Green tied the game for the first time in the fifth with back-to-back homers by Schoblocher and Jackie Miller.

After ULM took the lead off a wild pitch, North Texas tied the game for a second time in the sixth inning with a double by Jordan Terry. Foster scored on the play. Schoblocher posted the game-winning hit with a single.

Schoblocher is tied for the team lead with eight homers, and Miller is third with six.
