DENTON, Texas – The North Texas tennis team moved to 12-5 on the season after sweeping Tyler Junior College on Thursday afternoon at the Waranch Tennis Complex.

“We were just happy to get a match in today and work on our game,” head coach Sujay Lama said. “With a few of our matches being canceled due to rain, the challenge has been to stay sharp competitive.”

The Mean Green took an early lead winning all three doubles matches. Franziska Sprinkmeyer paired up with Agustina Valenzuela to defeat Fausthyara Pietersz and Johnson 8-2 at the No. 3 position.

Dané Joubert and Ilona Serchenko moved into the No. 2 position to defeat Kylie Reynaud and Kerry Wiegand. Seniors Valentina Starkova and Barbora Vykydalova defeated Kirsten Pierce and Alejandra Enderica 8-2 at the No. 1 spot.

Ilona Serchenko defeated Pierce in straight sets, 6-0; 6-2, at the No. 4 singles slot to be the first singles match completed. Joubert didn’t drop a point on her way to defeating Johnson, 6-0; 6-0, at the No. 6 position.

Valenzuela clinched the win for North Texas with a 6-0, 6-3 over Wiegand at the No. 5 spot. Starkova defeated Enderica, 6-4; 6-0, at the No. 2 position to bring the score to 5-0.

“For most part, we were sharp with our execution,” Lama added. “We now have a week to work hard and improve until we play our last two matches at home.”

The Mean Green returns to action when its hosts Sun Belt opponents Troy, on April 12, and Middle Tennessee, on April 14, at the Waranch Tennis Complex.
