UNT Volleyball Boots Rival Mavericks In Three

DENTON, Texas – Melanie Boykins and the Mean Green volleyball offense kicked into high gear and booted UT Arlington in a three-set sweep on Tuesday night (25-18, 25-17, 29-27).

The senior landed a career-high 14 kills on .609 hitting to give the Mean Green (3-1) its first win over the Mavericks (1-3) in four tries dating back to 1996. NT as a team hit .259 and held UTA to .138.

After rolling in the first two sets NT faced a game Mavericks squad in the third. Trailing 19-20, North Texas got a trio of kills from Courtney Windham, a pair from Boykins and one from Hallie McDonald to close out the longest set of the year so far.

“It was really important for us to shut them down in the third,” said Windham. “If they would have won that set they would have had a ton of confidence going into the fourth, and we just couldn’t allow that. I’m really proud of the way we stayed strong late in the match.”

Windham wasn’t alone on the offensive front. Eboni Godfrey landed 11 kills, while McDonald added eight and Madison Barr tallied seven. NT had just three attack errors in the first set, and 18 overall.

Sarah Willey once again led the Mean Green defense with 11 of the squad’s 36 digs. Godfrey’s powerful jump serve landed a pair of aces, while McDonald used deception to land an ace and serve a match-high 18 times.

The Mean Green will be at home this weekend hosting the North Texas Invitational, which featured No. 16 Oklahoma, Big East champion Cincinnati and Sam Houston State. NT will face the Bearkats at 7 p.m. on Friday night.
