UNT Volleyball Can’t Hold Off Texas Tech

DENTON, Texas – The newcomer duo of Eboni Godfrey and Courtney Windham knocked Texas Tech on its heels with a first set win, but the North Texas volleyball team couldn’t hold off the Red Raiders in a 3-1 loss (19-25, 25-15, 25-14, 25-21).

The Mean Green (9-6) hit .367 and forced a Texas Tech (13-1) sideout on 73 percent of its serves in rolling to a first set victory. NT jumped out to a 14-3 lead on the Red Raiders with a capacity crowd of 619 packed into the Mean Green Volleyball Center. The set win was the first against TTU in seven matches.

But that’s when the Big 12 opponent took over. TTU’s Amanda Dowdy landed 16 kills over the final three sets (18 overall) on .536 hitting in vaulting the Red Raiders to the win.

Godfrey led the Mean Green attack with 14 kills on .290 hitting and 11 digs, while Windham also reached double figures with 11 kills. Setter Kayla Saey guided the Mean Green offense with 38 assists, while Sarah Willey laid down a match-high 12 digs.

North Texas, the league’s defending West Division champion, opens up Sun Belt Conference play this Friday against the East Division’s FIU at 7 p.m. Florida Atlantic visits Denton on Sunday at 1 p.m.
