DENTON, Texas – Senior Carly McDowell scored her first goal of the season late in double-overtime to send North Texas soccer to a 1-0 win over the Sam Houston State Bearkats on Fri., August 24.

McDowell took a pass from Michelle Young before stunning the Bearkats in the 108th-minute on their own field. Young’s assist was her second on the season, with both helpers coming in a double-overtime period.

“It felt great to have the winning goal in such a tight game,” said McDowell. “I was just happy to help the team stay undefeated after our third away game.”

It’s the first time in school history that North Texas (3-0-0) has won the first three road games in a season, and the first time since 2009 that the team’s first three wins were decided by one goal.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jackie Kerestine picked up her second straight 1-0 shutout to give the Mean Green a 5-1-1 record against the Bearkats in the overall series. Like North Texas’ current

nine-game unbeaten streak, Kerestine’s six shutouts in her last eight games overall date back to last season.

“My defense played solid in front of me,” said Kerestine, who stopped all four Sam Houston State shots on goal. “We are all for the most part on the same page and they played outstanding during regular time as well as overtime.”

After the Mean Green went 0-2-12 in the last 14 double-overtime games before this season, North Texas has won back-to-back games in that situation.

“Give Sam Houston State credit, they held our offense in check all night,” said Hedlund. “Fortunately for us, it took two seniors stepping it up to get us the win we needed late in OT against a very good opponent on the road.”

The Mean Green opens up the home portion of the 2012 schedule on Sun., August 26, against the Houston Cougars at 1 p.m.
