BOCA RATON, Fla. – Despite a career-high 25 points from Loryn Goodwin, the North Texas women’s basketball team had their five-game winning streak snapped by Florida Atlantic 79-67 at FAU Arena. The loss is the first in the calendar year of 2013 for North Texas (7-11, 6-3) and the Owls extended their home-court conference winning streak to 11 games.

“It seemed like every time we had a run we just couldn’t finish it tonight and we turned the ball over way too much,” said head coach Mike Petersen. “Give them a lot of credit, they are tough at home but we just didn’t play well on either end tonight.”

After trailing by nine points at the half, the Owls (10-7, 7-2) opened up a 13-point lead at 64-51 after technical foul was called against BreAnna Dawkins. The technical foul ignited a 9-0 run for the Mean Green though as they cut the Florida Atlantic lead down to four points at 64-60 with five minutes to play.

The Owls had an answer back though as Chenise Miller and Breana Turner had back-to-back buckets to push the FAU lead to double figures with less than two minutes to play. Miller finished with a double-double, 22 points and 14 points. North Texas would not get any closer.

Goodwin’s 25 points were the most since Tamara Torru’s scored 26 points in 2011. Alexis Hyder had 19 points, one away from tying her career-high for North Texas.

North Texas opened up an early 18-15 lead in part to the play of Goodwin, who had 16 first half points. Florida Atlantic answered back with an 8-0 run to take a 23-18 lead midway through the first half. The Owls pushed their lead to nine points at the break 40-31.

North Texas returns to action at home on Thursday, January 24 as they host Middle Tennessee.
