UNT Women Lose To Texas

AUSTIN, Texas – The North Texas bid to upset the No. 24 Texas Longhorns fell just short as the Longhorns fought off the Mean Green to win 71-62 at the Frank Erwin Center.

The Mean Green led the at the break over Texas by nine and stretched their lead to 13 points in the second half, but the Longhorns shot over 69 percent in the second half to come from behind for the win.

The Mean Green (7-5) opened the game down 11-5, but went ahead on a 3-pointer from Brittney Hudson 16-15 with 13:15 left in the first half. North Texas pushed their lead to double figures at 31-21 with a 15-6 run with 3:57 left in the half.

Laura McCoy, who finished the night with a career-high 14 points, hit three of her four 3-pointers in the first half and the Mean Green led 34-25 at the half.

A stunned Erwin Center crowd saw North Texas extend their lead to 46-33 on a Desiree Nelson 3-pointer with 14:23 left in the game, but that’s when Texas (8-2) began their comeback. The Longhorns used a 17-4 run to tie the game up at 50-50 with 9:31 remaining fueled by Chassidy Fussell.

She scored 18 of her game-high 20 points in the second half and 10 of those points during the Longhorns run. Texas kept the pressure on as they used a 14-4 run to stretch their lead to 10 points at 64-54 with 5:04 remaining.

North Texas could not get any closer than seven points late in the game as the Longhorns held on for their third straight win.

Nelson finished the night with a season-high 13 points and Hudson had 11 points. North Texas returns to action on December 20 in their final non-conference game of the season on the road at Nicholls State at 2 p.m.
