ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington picked up its second nonconference win in as many days, beating Arlington Baptist 16-3 Wednesday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark.

The Mavericks improved to 22-24 going into this weekend’s Sun Belt Conference series at UALR. UTA outscored Texas Wesleyan and Arlington Baptist 27-6 in the two wins this week.

The Mavericks had a shaky bottom of the first defensively, as the Patriots (24-28) scored twice against UTA starter Zach Thompson. The Mavericks rebounded quickly in their first at-bat, scoring a season-high 10 runs in the bottom of the inning.

UTA pounded out nine hits in the first, including home runs from John Michael Twichell and Matt Shortall. Twichell’s three-run shot soared over the bushes in right field, while Shortall’s two-run bomb cleared Park Row.

The Mavericks added three more runs in the fourth, two coming on Darien McLemore’s single to right. Three runs in the fifth closed out a season-high scoring effort for UTA. The game was called due to the run rule in the seventh inning.

Shortall, Twichell and Travis Sibley led UTA’s 18-hit attack with three hits each. Twichell also had five RBI. Thompson (3-4) earned the win.
