ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington and Arkansas State poured in 24 runs on Sunday at Clay Gould Ballpark but it was the Red Wolves who came out on top with a 14-10 win in Sun Belt Conference play.

The teams combined for three home runs and 26 hits in the rubber match that saw the Mavericks fall to 8-16 overall and 1-5 in conference action. Arkansas State improved to 13-10 and 5-1 in the Sun Belt.

“We came out swinging the bat pretty good,” UT Arlington coach Darin Thomas said. “We just didn’t get enough. It was an offensive day which means that you are going to get pitches to hit. They did a good job in sticking it in there and it was a game where we just kind of ran out of juice.”

UTA completes a six-game homestand on Tuesday when it hosts the

Baylor Bears of the Big 12.

Ryan Bottger led the Mavericks with a season-high four hits, four runs and added two RBI. Levi Scott had three hits and a RBI, while Travis Sibley had two hits with three RBI and a run.

Bottger helped open up a three-run first with his first-career home run to score Matt Shortall. John Michael Twichell appeared to hit the second homer of the inning, but the ball was ruled to bounce off the wall instead of the batter’s eye in center. Twichell was awarded a triple that scored Greg McCall.

Arkansas State battled to take a 4-3 lead in the top of the second on a two-out rally that was extended on a UTA fielding error. However, the Mavs responded in the bottom half with a solo homer by Sibley, the first of his career to tie the game.

Sibley continued to shine at the plate in the third when the UTA third baseman singled up the middle to score two.

Another four-run inning by the Red Wolves, this time in the fifth, put Arkansas State up 8-6. The Mavericks scored a pair in the fifth to tie the game and Matt Shortall knocked his second hit of the day over the left-field wall for a solo home run.

Things unraveled for the Mavericks in the seventh when the Red Wolves put up a five spot in the frame. Dustin Jones opened the rally with a RBI triple and the next eight batters reached safely, including two bases-loaded walks to extend the lead to 13-10. ASU added its final run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly.
