ATLANTA, Georgia – UT Arlington finished off a Sun Belt Conference series win after topping Georgia State 6-4 Sunday afternoon at the GSU Baseball Complex.

The Mavericks (16-20) won the final two games of the series after dropping Friday’s opener. UTA is 8-7 in conference play after starting 1-5 and has won three consecutive league series. The Panthers dropped to 17-20 and 5-10.

UT Arlington starter Daniel Milliman improved to 4-0, including 3-0 in the Sun Belt, after working 5.2 innings. The senior right-hander gave up two runs on six hits, while striking out three and walking one.

The Mavericks took an early lead against GSU starter Tyler McClure in the second thanks to aggressive base running. Eric Tate and Travis Sibley opened the innings with singles. After a double steal and the ball being thrown into left, Tate trotted home with the first run of the game.

UT Arlington went up 3-0 in the fourth. The Mavericks loaded the bases with no outs on two hit batters and an error. Darien McLemore’s sac fly to left scored Justin Copeland and Tate scored for

the second time on a throwing error.

The Panthers finally got to Milliman on Trae Sweeting’s solo home run in the fifth. The Mavericks got that run back and more in their next at-bat.

Matt Shortall’s double to center scored McClemore, who opened the three-run sixth with a single. Greg McCall had a run-scoring single and Justin Copeland’s sac fly brought another run home for a 6-1 lead.

UTA reliever Chase Weaver came on in the sixth with two on and two outs after GSU scored its second run. Weaver induced a lazy fly ball to end that inning before giving up two runs in the eighth. TJ Whidby got the final two outs of the eighth and Jess Amedee nailed down his fourth save in the ninth.

The Mavericks are at Texas on Tuesday night in nonconference matchup. UT Arlington resumes Sun Belt play with a three-game series beginning Friday against league-leading UL Lafayette at Clay Gould Ballpark.
