ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington had its chances but couldn’t cash in Saturday afternoon in a 4-1 loss to Incarnate Word at Clay Gould Ballpark.

The Mavericks (0-2) scattered 10 hits, none for extra bases, and left 12 men on base. The Cardinals (1-1) didn’t exactly pound the ball, but the Cardinals did enough against UT Arlington starter Zach Thompson (0-1) to even their record after two days of the UTA Invitational.

UT Arlington had a golden chance in the eighth with the bases loaded and one out. Cardinals reliever Kris Looper got out of the jam when Ryan Bottger flied out in the infield and Travis Sibley struck out.

The Mavericks also had something going in the third after falling behind 1-0, Bottger reached on an error to open the inning and Sibley got on with a bunt single. Peter Cuomo moved both runners over with a sac bunt to set up the top of the order.

Derek Miller popped out before Darien McLemore walked to load the bases for slugger Matt Shortall. Incarnate Word starting pitcher Geno Encina (1-0) coaxed an infield fly out of Shortall to end the threat.

The Cardinals added to their lead with runs in fifth and sixth to chase

Thompson. Left-handed reliever Chase Weaver entered the game with two on and two outs, and kept the game at 3-0 with a fly out to end the sixth.

UT Arlington finally got to Encina in the sixth. Gregg McCall’s single up the middle scored Derek Miller, who reached on an error to start the inning. UIW reliever Alexis Garza retired the next two UTA batters to strand two runners on base.

The Mavericks finish up the UTA Invitation on Sunday with Jess Amedee on the mound against 2-0 Oklahoma State. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
