UTA Women Drop Game At WKU

BOWLING GREEN, Kentucky – UT Arlington women’s basketball fell 59-46 to WKU Wednesday night at E. A. Diddle Arena.

The Mavericks drop to 1-18 overall and 0-8 in the Sun Belt Conference. The Lady Toppers improve to 14-5 overall and 6-2 in league play.

“I thought we missed a lot of opportunities in the first half,” UT Arlington coach Krista Gerlich said. “At the half we talked about them coming out and really playing hard and they did and we didn’t stop them.

Senior Briana Walker picked up her third double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out of the game. Desherra Nwanguma was the only other Maverick to score in double figures with 11 points.

At the first media timeout the Lady Toppers were shooting 16.7 percent from the floor, but they still managed to forge a 13-7 lead.

UT Arlington pulled ahead when Tahlia Pope drove the ball and pulled up for a jump shot to give the Mavs the 16-14 lead. WKU’s Bianca McGee hit back-to-back 3-pointers to get the Toppers back on top. The first half ended with five lead changes and seven ties, but WKU headed into the locker room with the 26-25 lead.

Walker was two rebound shy of a double-double at the

half with 10 points and eight rebounds.

WKU opened the second half with a 9-2 run, shooting 60 percent from the floor early. The Lady Toppers continued to score as the Mavericks struggled shooting 24 percent in the second half.

WKU’s Chastity Gooch, all-American candidate, finished with 12 points, 12 rebounds and three steals.

UT Arlington travels to Atlanta to take on Georgia State Saturday at 6 p.m. at the GSU Sports Arena. The game will be steamed live on ESPN3.
