2011 Australian Open – Day 6

There were 2 upsets as the men finalized the round of 16 at the Australian Open.  Unseeded Milos Raonic of Canada knocked out No. 10 Mikhail Youzhny from Russia and Ukraine’s Alexandr Dolgopolov ousted Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (13).

Elsewhere, top-seeded Rafael Nadal cruised to a win over Australian Bernard Tomic.  No. 4 Robin Soderling, No 5 Andy Murray, and No. 7 David Ferrer all had little opposition while advancing. 

Np. 21 Marcos Baghdatis retired in the 4th set against No. 11 Jurgen Melzer.

There is only one American (Andy Roddick) left in the tournament after John Isner (20) lost in another extended 5th set to Marin Cilic (15).

The women’s 3rd-round was less predictable.  Beginning with hometown Australian Samantha Stosur (5) losing to Petra Kvitova (25).  No. 10 Shahar Peer lost to No. 22 Flavia Pennetta and unseeded Iveta Benesova defeated No. 16 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.  Also unseeded Ekaterina Makarova ousted No. 13 Nadia Petrova.

Advancing for the women were No. 2 Vera Zvonareva and No. 3 Kim Clijsters.  No. 10 Agnieszka Radwanska also advanced into the round of 16.
