Raiders Edge Cowboys

OAKLAND, Calif. — Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, who sat out the preseason opener, saw his first game action since signing a $108 million contract extension. But he failed to get the offense into the end zone on the Cowboys’ first two drives, the first ending in a field goal. The second drive ended with a blocked field-goal attempt, and the Raiders went on to defeat the Cowboys 19-17 on Friday night.

Romo completed 6 of 8 passes for 88 yards and was sacked once. His backup, veteran Kyle Orton, completed 6 of 6 for 52 yards and a touchdown.

For the Raiders, starting quarterback Matt Flynn completed 4 of 5 passes for 37 yards and was sacked once, but kicker Sebastian Janikowski kept the Raiders in the game in the first half with field goals of 49 and 40 yards. Raiders backup kicker Eddy Carmona added a 42-yard field goal in the third quarter, then the game-decider of 23 yards with 8:11 left.

The Raiders outgained the Cowboys in yards, 325-291, but more surprisingly committed only four penalties.
