Stars Lose Shootout With Oilers

DALLAS — Left winger David Perron scored the deciding goal in the shootout, beating Dallas goaltender Kari Lehtonen top shelf as the Edmonton Oilers handed the Dallas Stars a 3-2 defeat at American Airlines Center.
Right winger Jordan Eberle also converted for the Oilers in the shootout while Dallas’ lone goal in the shootout came from center Rich Peverley, Dallas’ second shooter. Perron scored on Edmonton’s second attempt and after Dallas rookie right wing Alex Chiasson lost the puck on the Stars’ third attempt, the game was over.
Dallas had gotten a pair of goals from left winger Ryan Garbutt in the loss but blew a pair of leads to set up overtime and the shootout.
Garbutt’s first goal, his fourth of the season, came at 11:37 of the second when he beat Oilers goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov with a backhand to his glove side after stealing the puck from Edmonton defenseman Denis Grebeshkov near the Oilers blue line.
Dallas was shorthanded after defenseman Jordie Benn earned his first penalty of the season at 9:38 of the second for slashing.
Garbutt’s second goal came 3:45 of the third period when he beat Edmonton’s other
netminder, Devan Dubnyk with a wrister from the low slot for the eventual game-winner.
Edmonton tied it for a second time at 2-2 when defenseman Andrew Ference scored his second of the season with a slapshot from near the Dallas blue line that trickled through Lehtonen with 5:07 remaining in regulation.
Dubnyk had entered the game with 3:41 remaining in the second after Garbutt and Bryzgalov collided near the far post. Bryzgalov, who stopped 28 of the 29 shots he faced in 36:19, was holding his head while being attended to by the Oilers’ medical staff.
The opening period saw Dallas called for a pair of bench minors for too many men on the ice in the game’s opening 10 minutes. However, the Oilers were unable to convert. Dallas went on the power play three times in a period where they outshot Edmonton 18-9 but misfired on all three chances.
Edmonton had tied it up late in the second when Ales Hemsky scored his fifth five seconds before the second intermission. Oilers left winger Ryan Jones gained possession of the puck on the left side of the Dallas zone following a hard hit on Stars rookie right winger Alex Chiasson against the boards.
Jones then sent the puck toward the Dallas net, a pass which found Hemsky and he quickly slipped one into the left side of the Stars goal to make it a 1-1 contest.
Dubnyk stopped 15 of the 16 shots he faced while Lehtonen made 30 saves on 32 shots for Dallas.
