TCU Swimming and Diving Grabs Wins in San Diego

SAN DIEGO – TCU’s swimming and diving teams each picked up wins Friday evening, in a five-team meet in San Diego.

The Horned Frog men (6-2) knocked off UC-San Diego, 165-135, in the only men’s meet on the evening. The TCU women improved to 8-4 this season after taking down Washington State, 163.50-123.50, and UC-San Diego, 170-127.

TCU won the men’s 200-medley relay to open the meet with Laszlo Gyurko, Edgar Crespo, Luiz Azarias and Devin Price clocking a 1:32.09. They touched the wall just ahead of UC-San Diego’s squad, which notched a 1:32.19.

Freshman Cooper Robinson got 2012 off on the right foot for the Frogs after blistering the competition with a 50.63 in the 100-back. He was nearly two seconds ahead of UC-San Diego’s second-place finisher. Robinson also won the 200-back (1:50.27) to finish ahead of teammates Nelson Head and Josh Mangus.

Crespo turned in another fine performance in the 100-breast with a first place showing in 55.44. The Panama City, Panama, native has never been beaten in the 100-breast during a dual meet while wearing a TCU uniform.

Gyurko was a winner in the 50-free with a 21.13. Gyurko touched the wall just two-hundredths of a second in front of UC-San Diego’s finisher, for a thrilling win. The Szekszard, Hungary, native added another win in the 100-free (46.22).

Azarias won two events on the evening, taking the 100-fly in 51.47 and the 200-fly with a 1:52.52. TCU’s other individual win came from Michael Franz in the 500-free, where he clocked a 4:37.79.

On the women’s side, Katie Lybbert won the 3-meter diving after

scoring a 271.25. Victoria Thicke-Rattray was strong once again for TCU by notching a 2:08.72 in the 200-IM. Her effort was good for second place overall.

Sabine Rasch finished in second place overall in the 50-free after clocking a 23.88, finishing behind only one swimmer in the 20-woman field. She also added a third-place overall showing in the 100-free with a 51.62.

TCU’s women’s 400-free relay added a win to close the meet. Rasch, Katie Scarsella, Mackenzie Schuler and Parris Schoppa won the event in 3:30.20, ahead of Rice’s squad that touched in 3:30.45.

The Frogs return to action Jan. 19 when the TCU men host SMU for senior night. The women’s squad will be in action at North Texas on the following evening.
