Texas Tennis Open Gets Underway In Grapevine

The WTA returns to Texas for the first time in 16 years this week at the inaugural Texas Tennis Open.  The $220,000 International level event is one of two new stops on the North American summer swing.  11 of the top 50 players in the world are competing this week at the tournament in Grapevine.

The final qualifiers were determined Sunday as Kateryna Bondarenko, Chanelle Scheepers, Angelique Kerber, and Aravane Rezai advanced to the main draw.

The opening round got underway Sunday afternoon with Julia Goerges (3) defeating Alize Cornet in 3 sets.  Sorana Cirstea upset (7) Jarmila Gajdosova after losing the first set.  8th seed Irina-Camelia Begu had little trouble with Pauline Parmentier.

Johanna Larsson, Gisela Dulko, Anastasija Sevastova, and Alberta Brianti were also winners in the opening round.

The Doubles matches opened with the duo of Melanie Oudin and Chanelle Scheepers defeating Ryann Foster and Elizabeth Lumpkin.

First round play continues tonight at the Hilton DFW Lakes Hotel, headlined by Shuai Peng going against Melanie Oudin.
