ARLINGTON, Texas – Justin Schnedler won his first career game at UT Arlington, as the Mavericks pounded out a 9-3 victory Monday afternoon over Utah at Clay Gould Ballpark.

The Mavericks improved to 5-10 and avenged a 5-3 loss to Utah on Friday. UT Arlington returns to the diamond Tuesday night at 7 p.m. against Oklahoma at Globe Life Park.

“We got some big hits and we got some two-out hits, so maybe it just takes one game to get it going,” UT Arlington coach Darin Thomas said. “Offensively, I thought we were really good.”

UT Arlington bats gave Schnedler plenty of support. The Mavericks racked up 17 hits, their second-highest total of the season. Matt Shortall led the way going 4-5 to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.

“I’m just trying to stay consistent every day,” Shortall said. “Obviously, you can’t go 4-5 every day.”

The senior DH connected on his first home run of the season – a solo shot to right in the fourth – and drove in three runs. Shortall has reached base safely in all 15 games this season.

Derek Miller, Brady Cox and Eric Tate each had at least two hits. Nine Mavericks had

at least one hit. Cox added two RBI.

Schnedler (1-1) worked 5.1 innings, giving up two earned runs on three hits and four walks. The junior transfer from Northeast Texas JC struck out four and threw 101 pitches, 60 for strikes.

“He did a good job,” Thomas said. “If he’s in the strike zone, his stuff is good enough to win.”

UTA relievers Daniel Milliman and TJ Whidby combined to give up one earned run over the final 3.2 innings.
