Banister Named AL Manager of the Year

Texas Rangers manager Jeff Banister was named the winner of the American League Manager of the Year Award on Tuesday.

The award, voted on by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America, was announced during an hourlong special on MLB Network.

Banister received 17 first-place votes and 112 points overall.

Houston Astros manager A.J. Hinch and Minnesota Twins manager Paul Molitor were second and third, respectively.

Banister finished his first season at the helm of the Rangers 88-74 after the team finished in last place in the AL West in 2014 after being decimated by injuries. Texas won 37 of 58 games to close out the season, capturing the sixth division title in club history.

The Rangers’ run ended with a Game 5 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League Division Series.
