Filmore Scores Career-High 29 Points In 73-64 SMU Win Over Texas A&M Corpus Christi

DALLAS (SMU) – Alisha Filmore scored a career-high 29 points, going 7-for-11 from 3-point range to match the second most 3-pointers in a game at SMU, to lead the Mustangs to a 73-64 victory over Texas A&M Corpus Christi in Moody Coliseum Sunday.

The junior was 9-of-16 from the field and grabbed five rebounds. Christine Elliott and Akil Simpson each scored 10 points and finished with eight rebounds. Simpson also posted career highs in assists (4) and steals (3). Freshman Destynee Hive-McCray nearly gave the Mustangs (6-4) four players in double-figures, scoring a season-high nine points with four rebounds.

Myeisha Myles led the Islanders (4-8) with 17 points, but the visiting team never led in the game. SMU scored the first bucket on a layup by Simpson less than 30 seconds into the game, and the Mustangs outscored the Islanders 22-6 over the first eight minutes of the game. SMU shot 42.9-percent from the field in the first 20 minutes, taking a 41-23 lead into the lockerroom. Filmore had already scored 14 points, and SMU was ahead 26-13 in rebounds.

After shooting 38.5-percent in the first half, 10-of-26 from the field, the Islanders made six of their first 10 shots in the second half to cut the lead to eight, 44-36, with 13:30 left in the game. With the lead just three, Filmore took control, sinking four 3-pointers in the last four minutes to lift SMU to the nine-point victory.

SMU shot 40.3-percent from the field for the game, connecting on 27-of-67 field goals, including 10-of-25 from 3-point range. The Mustangs finished with 42 rebounds to the Islanders’ 38.

The Mustangs next game is Wednesday against Wake Forest in Moody Coliseum at 7 p.m. After a break for Christmas, SMU will return to action against UTSA in Moody Coliseum on Dec. 28 at 7 p.m.
