Matthew Wolff’s second consecutive 64 has him three shots clear of the field at the Rocket Mortgage Classic at the Detroit Golf Club.

Wolff’s 8-under third round featured nine birdies and an eagle.

Wolff is going for his second win following last July’s triumph at the 3M Open in Minnesota. He does not have a top 10 finish since the victory at TPC Twin Cities.

“It was a great round of golf out there today,” Wolff said. “I heard an ice cream truck circling the property and seemed like every time I heard that, I had made birdie or made a putt, so I’ve got to give a lot of credit to that. I think on the fifth hole I made that long one. more birdies, more ice cream, so that was my mindset from that point on and probably going to be the same one tomorrow.”

Ryan Armour is tied with Bryson DeChambeau in second at 16-under

“It felt like the front nine was in cruise control, I had looks all the time,” Armour said. “Then the back nine, it got a little squirrelly there early and got more looks coming, then I made the mistake on 17 of trying to go after one and that’s not my game.”

Wesley Bryan fired a 65 to move into contention. His round included eight birdies including all four of the par 5s.

“For the most part, hitting it where I was looking,” Bryan said. “I drove it pretty good off the tee and was able to see some putts go in today, which was nice.”

Webb Simpson was the overnight leader along with Chris Kirk, but a 1-under 71 dropped him to a tie for eighth.

Hideki Matsuyama also fired a 65 to move from the cut line to the front page of the leaderboard. He sits one shot behind Bryan, Simpson, Viktor Hovland and a slew of others at 12-under.
