Mays Named AAC Player of the Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (SMU) – Keena Mays was named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the second straight week and third time this season after averaging 25.5 points in two games for the Mustangs. The senior scored a career-high 34 points at UTEP, matching the highest point total in the conference this season.

Mays began the week with a game-high, 17-point performance in an 82-39 win against Southeastern Louisiana. She also had seven rebounds in each game, with six assists and three steals on the week. The Mansfield, Texas, native shot 45.9 percent from the field, including a 10-for-21 clip at UTEP, 47.6 percent.

For the season, the SMU guard is averaging a league-leading 19.8 points per game, and is second in The American with 48 assists. She is shooting 39.2 percent from the field, and 35.4 percent from behind the arc. Mays is also third on the team, averaging 5.9 rebounds per game.

Mays is the only multiple recipient of the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week award, and SMU and Connecticut are the only two teams with award winners to date. The Mustangs (8-2) return to action Dec. 21 at North Texas. After a pair of road games at Louisville and Cincinnati to start the conference slate, SMU will play its first game in newly-renovated Moody Coliseum Jan. 4 against USF in the second half of a doubleheader with the SMU men’s team.
