Mays Selected As A Finalist For WBCA All-America Award

ATLANTA (SMU) – Keena Mays was named as one of 52 All-Region finalists for the Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Association All-America Team, officials announced Monday. The Conference USA Player of the Year is one of six players selected as a finalist from Region 4.

Mays led the Mustangs to the 18th postseason appearance in program history, and the 12th since 1993 when Rhonda Rompola took SMU to the Women’s National Invitational Tournament in her second season as head coach. The junior transfer is averaging 18.5 points per game and scored at least 20 in nine of 22 games.

She also leads the conference and ranks 19th in the NCAA, shooting 40.7 percent from 3-point range. Mays posted two double-doubles, scoring 23 points with 11 rebounds in her first game at SMU and had 29 points, including the game-winner, with 13 points in a triple-overtime win against UAB. She is third on the team with 5.8 rebounds per game, and is sixth in C-USA with 3.8 assists per game.

Once she became eligible, SMU won 12 of its next 14 games, including a 10-game win streak which included the first nine conference games. It marked just the second time the Mustangs won 10 straight, and came just two games shy of matching the longest streak in program history.

Mays will lead the Mustangs against Bowling Green State in the first round of the WNIT Thursday at 6 p.m. CT in Bowling Green, Ohio.
