ARLINGTON, Texas — The Texas Rangers ended a season-high three-game losing streak with a 9-5 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday afternoon at Rangers Ballpark.
After a scoreless first, Texas sent nine unanswered runs across the plate from the second through the fifth and notched hits from all nine of its starting lineup by the end of the run. Mitch Moreland capped a four-run third inning with what proved to be the winning hit in the contest with a homer off of the top of the right-field foul pole.
“When I hit it, I thought I hit it well,” Moreland said. “I thought it was going to stay a bit more true than it did, it caught me off guard when it went off the pole. It started hooking at the end so I’m glad it caught the pole.”
Moreland said that the team hasn’t been thinking about losing three games in a row for the first time this season and are just trying to play their style of baseball.
“We got out of it for a couple of games,” Moreland said. “But we came back out today and made it work and it was a good win for us.”
The Rangers chased Diamondback’s starter Brandon McCarthy (2-4) in the third after

the first of three singles by Jurickson Profar.
“(McCarthy) didn’t throw the ball where he needed to today,” Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said. “These guys are a very good hitting team. It was one of those days and we weren’t very sharp. You can’t get behind on these guys.”
McCarthy departed after throwing 2 2/3 innings, giving up six earned runs on nine hits without a strikeout.
Rangers starter Justin Grimm (5-3) settled in after allowing a leadoff hit to start the game. He retired the next 10 Arizona batters before giving up back-to-back singles in the fourth. He ran into trouble in the sixth, allowing a double and three consecutive hits that led to three runs.
“In the last inning I got overly aggressive,” Grimm said. “It’s one of those outings that if I would have gone out and given up three in the first and went five scoreless I would have felt better about it. But I am going to look at the first five innings and all of the positives and keep being aggressive.”
Grimm finished with three strikeouts and two earned runs with eight hits in six innings pitched.
Michael Kirkman came in to relieve Grimm and lasted just 2/3 of an inning, giving up four hits and two earned runs. Neal Cotts replaced Kirkman to get the final out of the seventh, stranding runners on the corners.
Robbie Ross came in to work the ninth, giving up back-to-back singles with one out before a double play ended the game.
A misplayed ball by Diamondbacks center field A.J. Pollock opened the floodgates for the Rangers in the second. Nelson Cruz sent the first pitch to center and Pollock came in on the play, allowing the line drive to sail just over his glove and to the wall for a double.
A.J. Pierzynski brought home Cruz two batters later with a double of his own — a line drive down the third-base line. Pierzynski scored on a two-out single up the middle by Leonys Martin.
Three consecutive one-out hits pushed four runs across for the Rangers in the third. After a lead-off single by David Murphy, Adrian Beltre doubled off the left-field wall and came around to score on a single by Cruz. Moreland sent a fastball off the top of the right-field foul pole for a two-run homer, his 11th home run of the season.
The Rangers continued to pour in runs in the fourth and fifth. Murphy added a one-out home run to right in the fourth and Elvis Andrus sent a line drive up the middle with the bases loaded in the fifth for a two-RBI single.
Texas’ Profar had three hits for the first time in his career. Murphy had a single and his seventh home run of the season, and Beltre, Cruz and Martin each added two hits.
“I am getting comfortable here,” Profar said. “We have a good team here and I’m trusting myself and my teammates. I am trying to do the best I can to help the team.”
Paul Goldschmidt led the Diamondbacks with his fifth career four-hit game.
