Rangers Clinch Playoff Spot

The Texas Rangers clinched at least a wildcard spot in the American League playoffs with a win in the nightcap of Sunday’s double-header against the Angels.  The Rangers can win the AL West with just one win against the Oakland A’s in a 3-game series that starts tonight in Oakland.

The double-header on Sunday did not start very well for Texas.  After blowing a 4-3 lead in the ninth inning to lose the first game 5-4, the Rangers quickly fell behind 4-0 in the second game.

Mike Napoli saved the day for the Rangers, going 3-for-3 with 2 home runs and 6 RBIs.  The Rangers held on for an 8-7 win to clinch the playoffs.

“We’ve got the opportunity to play in the postseason again, but our goals are not over with yet,” said Rangers manager Ron Washington. “We had a toast, but all it was, was congratulating them on getting to the postseason. But what we’re after, we haven’t got there yet. So enjoy it and go to Oakland and keep going.”

Texas will try to clinch the division tonight at 9:05pm in Oakland.  Rookie pitcher Martin Perez is scheduled to be on the mound for the Rangers.
