Rangers decline mutual option on Guerrero for 2011

Arlington, Texas — The Texas Rangers announced today that the club has declined the mutual contract option on Vladimir Guerrero for the 2011 season.

“When we signed Vlad last winter, the intent behind the deal was a one year agreement, while the option was a way for us to move some of the salary into the buyout,” said General Manager Jon Daniels. “We agreed at that time it wouldn’t be exercised. Vlad was outstanding for us this year, on the field and in the clubhouse, and was a big reason we won the American League. No one is closing any doors.”

Guerrero, 35, batted .300 with 29 home runs and 115 RBI in 152 games with Texas this season. He ranked among league leaders in RBI (4th), total bases (9th, 294), and home runs (T9th), and was selected to the All-Star team for a 9th time.
