Rangers Lose In 10

ARLINGTON, Texas — With two outs in the top of the 10th inning, Kyle Seager was looking for a pitch to drive.

He found one.

Seager’s two-run home run off Texas pitcher Robbie Ross sent the Seattle Mariners to a 4-2 victory and a second consecutive triumph over the Rangers on Wednesday night.

Seager, who went 3-for-5 with two singles, launched a 1-1 pitch into the Rangers’ bullpen in right-center field.

His blast made a winner out of lefty Charlie Furbush (2-4). Tom Wilhelmsen retired the Rangers in order in the 10th for the save.

Ross took the loss and fell to 4-2.

“I knew I hit it pretty good, but it didn’t really get too high for me,” Seager said. “I was hoping, let’s put it that way.”

David Murphy had two hits, including a home run, for the Rangers, and Adrian Beltre had a double and single in a game that pit Seattle ace Felix Hernandez against Texas lefty Derek Holland.

Hernandez gave up two runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts over seven innings. Home runs by Murphy and Ian Kinsler in the fifth gave the Rangers a 2-1 lead.

“Felix did a great job again,” Mariners manager Eric Wedge said. “So consistent. When he did

get in trouble, he made pitches or we made plays behind him, so it was good to see.”

Holland pitched six innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and striking out 10.

In the 10th, Ross issued a two-out walk to pinch-hitter Michael Saunders after getting ahead 0-2. Ross located a fastball in on Seager.

“He swings it well,” Ross said. “I threw it where I wanted to throw it, but he hit it.”

“He’s pretty tough on lefties,” Seager said of Ross. “You know: Just trying to look for a good pitch to hit and try not to miss it.”

Holland gave up a home run to Jason Bay to start the game.

The Rangers threatened in the second inning when they put two runners on at the corners with two outs, but Leonys Martin’s unassisted out to first ended the threat.

Murphy led off the fifth inning with a drive into the Rangers’ bullpen in right-center. With one out, Kinsler drove a 3-2 pitch into the left-field seats for his eighth homer of the season.

The Mariners tied the game at 2-2 on Mike Zunino’s single that scored Raul Ibanez in the sixth. Seattle appeared poised to tack on more runs with the bases loaded, but Holland struck out Dustin Ackley and Brad Miller.

Seattle put runners on the corners with one out in the eighth against Rangers reliever Tanner Scheppers, but Ackley hit into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.

That left it for Seager in the 10th.

“It’s always good to win within your division,” said Wedge, whose team topped Texas in the series opener on Tuesday, 9-2. “It’s always better to do that on the road within your division. The guys have done a nice job the last couple of nights.”
