Rangers Lose To A’s

OAKLAND, Calif. — Left-hander Ross Detwiler’s return to a major league rotation didn’t go as he planned Wednesday when he made his debut for the Texas Rangers.

Detwiler gave up eight runs (five earned) on nine hits in a 10-0 loss to the Oakland A’s. He struck out two, walked two and lasted only 4 1/3 innings.

The 29-year-old veteran, who spent the entire 2014 season as a reliever for Washington, made his first start since July 13, 2013, against the Milwaukee Brewers with the Nationals.

“I definitely thought my debut with a new team would go a lot better,” Detwiler said. “I put us in a hole early, a big hole. Command was terrible today. If I want to help this team compete, I’ll need to be a lot better than what I was today.”

Rangers manager Jeff Banister pointed to Detwiler’s lack of control, especially on the inside part of the plate.

“He lost command of the fastball in,” Banister said. “That really set the ball rolling for him. The breaking ball wasn’t in the strike zone as much as he wanted.

“I’m proud of how he continued to compete, to go out and battle. It was a learning experience for him.
