Rangers Release Rhodes

The Texas Rangers announced today that the club has placed left-handed pitcher Arthur Rhodes on release waivers. He becomes a free agent on Wednesday, when he would be eligible to sign with another club.

Rhodes, 41, went 3-3 with a 4.81 ERA (13 ER/24.1 IP) in 32 relief appearances for Texas this season. He was on the club’s Opening Day roster and spent the entire year with the Rangers. He was designated for assignment on Tuesday when right-handed pitcher Mike Adams was added to the 25-man roster.

Rhodes ranks second among active pitchers with 881 career appearances, trailing only the Yankees’ Mariano Rivera (1023) in that category. This is the 20th season in which Rhodes has appeared in a game. He joins just three other players who are active in 2011 and made their major league debut in 1991 or earlier: Omar Vizquel (1989), Ivan Rodriguez (1991), and Jim Thome (1991).
