The Texas Rangers moved another game closer to the AL West division title with a 7-2 victory over the Oakland A’s on Tuesday night. Texas is now 5 games ahead of the 2nd-place LA Angels with 8 to play.
Starting pitcher Derek Holland went 7 innings, giving up just 2 hits while striking out 7 for the Rangers. Holland is now 9-1 in his last 10 decisions and 15-5 overall for the year.
Adrian Beltre opened the scoring with a 3-run line-drive homer to center field to give Texas all the runs they would need. It is Beltre’s 28th home run of the season. “I’m seeing good pitches and I’m not missing pitches,” Beltre said. “I’m making good solid contact and the ball is going out of the park. I’ll take it for the rest of the way.”
The Rangers would keep the pressure on, scoring in each of the next 2 innings. Michael Young would lead Texas with 3 of the 14 hits on the night. Young has 201 hits on the season, the 6th time in his career he has had at least 200 hits. He also has a career-high number of RBI’s with 104.
Texas’ magic number is down to 4, they can clinch the playoff spot next week at home versus the Mariners. The Rangers continue their road swing in Oakland tonight.
