Scottie Scheffler Fires a 63 at Colonial
|Scottie Scheffler fired his second consecutive bogey-free round as he was in the proverbial “Zone” on Saturday at Colonial Country Club during a 7-under 63 that featured the world No. 1 firing at pins all throughout the sweltering Texas afternoon.
“I played nicely today. I got off to a pretty good start, had some nice up-and-downs there early in the round,” Scheffler said. “It was nice to keep a clean card today, for sure. I definitely, for sure, had some key up-and-downs to keep the round going, then I had those nice birdies coming down the stretch to move up the leaderboard a bit.”
After Scheffler’s first round triple bogey on the par 3 13th hole, he has not had a single blemish on his card including his second round 65.
“Going into today I wanted to post a good number,” Scheffler added. “I didn’t obviously know what the leaders were going to do, but just tried to do my best to not look too far ahead and continue to go out there and execute and try and give myself as many looks as possible.”
Scheffler began the day seven shots behind the 10-under lead of Davis Riley, but his Moving Day 63 propelled him into second place and a spot in the final pairing on Sunday’s final round alongside Riley.
Pierceson Coody and Hayden Buckley shot matching 69s and in at 9-under, on shot behind Scheffler.
Collin Morikawa’s adventurous 67 began with a front nine 38, but did a 180 with a 29 on the back nine that featured six birdies coming in. He is 6-under and in a tie for seventh place.
Dallas resident Tom Kim was paired with Scheffler on Saturday and is 2-under 68 has him in a tie for 11th.
Fan favorite Rickie Fowler fired a 66 and moved up 20 spots in a tie for 11th.
Jordan Spieth shot a 1-over 71 and is 1-under and in a tie for 39th.
