SMU Swimmers Sink TCU

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU men’s swimming and diving team edged crosstown rival TCU, 156-144, Wednesday night at Perkins Natatorium. The contest was the Mustangs’ first dual meet of the season.

SMU was led by its diving team as sophomores Devin Burnett and Hayden Hodges, and freshman Daniel Pitts swept the three-meter event with scores of 387.90, 362.40 and 300.38, respectively. Burnett (346.88) and Hodges (317.48) also went one-two in the one-meter dive.

Senior David Larsson had a strong showing, earning two top finishes on the night. Larsson won the 100-yard freestyle, touching the wall with a time of 45.73 and claimed victory in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 50.20. He was also a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay squad that finished the event in 1:32.36.

Junior Matthew Napier-Jameson won the 100-yard breaststroke, clocking in at 57.73. He finished second in the 200-yard event (2:09.79) behind teammate Julian Fletcher (2:08.82).

The Mustangs turned in a dominant performance in the 200-yard freestyle as junior Nicolai Hansen won the event in 1:41.10, narrowly edging out fellow Pony Matt Roney (1:41.99). Roney was also a member of the top 400-yard freestyle relay team as SMU won the race in 3:04.55.

Freshman Eastman Holloway continued his rookie campaign with a strong win the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:38.48.

Also earning important points were junior Ryan Koops and sophomore Matas Andriekus who earned runner-up honors in the 50-yard freestyle (21.06) and the 200-yard backstroke (1:51.57), respectively.

SMU’s win was bolstered by the SMU Student Athletic Advisory Committee’s annual “Pack the House” event, with more than 150 SMU student athletes in attendance.

The Mustangs compete in the Phil Hansel Invitational hosted by Houston Nov. 15-17.
