TULSA, Okla. (SMU) – Freshman Alicia Froling scored 21 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, but the SMU Mustangs could not overcome a late burst from Tulsa and fell to the Golden Hurricane, 74-58, at the Donald W. Reynolds Center on Wednesday night.

After trailing at halftime by two, Froling scored four straight points to give SMU (4-16, 0-9 The American) a 33-31 lead early in the second frame. Overall, SMU went on an 8-3 run to start the second half, with sophomore Kiara Perry hitting a jumper at the 16:52 mark to give the Mustangs a 37-34 edge, forcing a Tulsa (10-10, 5-4) timeout.

Out of the timeout, Tulsa went on a 20-6 run to take a 54-43 lead with 11:32 to go in the game. The Mustangs would cut the lead back to single-digits on two occasions, but Tulsa would hold a 10-plus point lead for the last 4:12 of the game.

The Mustangs fell to a 15-8 deficit at the 14:11 point of the 1st half, but bounced back with a 12-3 run to take a 20-18 lead by the 8:06 mark. Froling had 15 points and 11 rebounds at halftime.

The 21 points was a season-high for Froling and the 15 rebounds tied a season-best effort against Texas A&M on Dec. 9. The double-double was her fourth this season and her second consecutive after scoring 18 points with 11 rebounds versus UCF on Sunday.

Perry would finish with 10 points for SMU, while junior Destynee Hives-McCray had eight points with eight rebounds. Tulsa had five players score in double-figures, led by Teanna Reid’s 19 points on 7-of-8 shooting.

SMU will host Tulane at Moody Coliseum on Tuesday at 7 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast online live on the American Digital Network.
